4 out of 5 stars gritty police drama and sinister urban fantasy - WITCHBLADE maintains its brand of comic book goodness   September 21, 2009

WITCHBLADE Vol. 6 collects #116-120 of the series, only five issues, yeah, but this TPB is bolstered with 30+ pages consisting of a cover gallery, Stjepan Sejic's sketchbook, and Ron Marz's each page commentary for issue #116. This bunch of issues comes on the heels of the FIRST BORN arc and finds tough-as-nails NYPD homicide detective Sara Pezzini coming off her maternity leave, now balancing motherhood and reunited with one half of the ancient magical artifact known as the Witchblade. Sara learns that she's been re-assigned to the Special Cases division, which means Sara would now be handling cases which border on the weird and macabre (except that that's what she's been doing all along already). On her first day back, Sara ends up with a nasty triple homicide, the victims mutilated and crucified on crosses.

As readers of the series already know, there are currently two bearers sharing the Witchblade: Sara Pezzini and dancer Danielle Baptiste. Writer Ron Marz has a pretty smooth time plonking Sara Pezzini into crime-fighting situations, what with her being a cop. It's a bit trickier with Dani. Dani Baptiste, as mentioned, is a dancer and still learning her new role as Witchblade bearer. Her story arc here concerns her blossoming relationship with current beau David, this enigmatic guy who seems really unfazed - I mean, suspiciously unfazed - with Dani's Witchblade connection. David was introduced in the last trade collection, and we finally learn what's what with the guy, starting with issue #116 when a bit of his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a crossbow bolt shot into his apartment. The timing sucks for David - not that there's ever any good timing to get shot at with a crossbow bolt - but David was about to get it on with Dani. But it's a good thing for the male readers because digital painter Stjepan Sejic is awesome at illustrating gorgeous women, and Dani in this scene is purely starkers (with key body parts kept strictly in shadows).

Volume 6 doesn't have the sheer supernatural bombast of the last trade collection (Witchblade Volume 5: First Born), but there's still an element of the mystical here. In the three-issue arc "Advent" (#116-118), Sara and Dani go up against a murderous immortal who craves the Witchblade. In issue #119, Internal Affairs is once again poking into Sara's business, as Sara narrates her run-in with the mysterious cyborg Aprhodite IV. Issue #120 is devoted primarily to girl talk, as Sara and a heartbroken Dani have another one of those heart to hearts.

I have to admit that I'd strayed from WITCHBLADE a few years ago and had only recently gotten back on board. This is due largely to the present creative team, writer Ron Marz and his strong storytelling and artist Stjepan Sejic, whose lavish artwork really is on par with Alex Ross's stuff. Good news is that Marz and Sejic have vowed to stay on at least until issue #150. So, by my count, that's still a few years of comic book goodness to savor and anticipate. Now bring on the War of the Witchblades (probably in Volume 8).

What has kept me buying this series is a combination of great artwork, and consistently strong and entertaining story telling. Hopefully they wont change anything and screw it up.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Team ever!   August 15, 2009

This is the first ever Volume of the regular Witchblade series which is not only written by Ron Marz (Green Lantern), but also painted by Stjepan Seijic (First Born). This means that the writing is as good as it ever was, and the art on par with that of Alex Ross (Kingdom Come). What has happened before is explained well enough to be understood by people who have never read Witchblade, and even readers who lost interest in the series when the late Michael Turner (Fathom, Soulfire) stopped penciling it will certainly agree that this book is a worthy successor to the legendary first storylines.
