Product Description
Hellboy is one of the most celebrated comics series in recent years. The ultimate artists' artist and a great storyteller whose work is in turns haunting, hilarious, and spellbinding, Mike Mignola has won numerous awards in the comics industry and beyond. When strangeness threatens to engulf the world, a strange man will come to save it. Sent to investigate a mystery with supernatural overtones, Hellboy discovers the secrets of his own origins, and his link to the Nazi occultists who promised Hitler a final solution in the form of a demonic avatar.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for   August 31, 2010
Rachel E. Gray (San Francisco, CA United States)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This first volume of Hellboy, as one might expect, introduces the premise, the characters (both heroes and villians), the mysteries, and some of the themes of the series.

I liked all of them, and I thought they had a lot of potential. I also liked some of the art enough to wonder if it would look good on my wall. And yet somehow I was kind of disappointed. There was nothing wrong with this, and no weaknesses that I can pinpoint; I simply didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped, and wasn't as wowed as much as I'd been led to believe I would be. Or wasn't wowed at all.

I did enjoy it, and intend to read more, but I didn't think it was anything special. Sometimes this is the case with the beginning of a series, so I'll keep my hopes and expectations high for the next volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Fun beginning.   August 6, 2010
Robert P. Beveridge (Cleveland, OH)
Mike Mignola, Hellboy: Seed of Destruction (Dark Horse Books, 1994)

Man, it took me forever to get a copy of this. Every copy my library had seems to have walked off shortly after the movie came out, and no one bothered to replace it. Thankfully we have a reciprocation agreement with a bunch of other libraries in the state, and one of them was able to track one down for me. Hallelujah, I can finally start reading Hellboy!

The cover tells us this is the book upon which Guillermo del Toro's movie was based, and yes, you can see the similarities in some places (most notably the prologue), but I'm guessing the bulk of the flick comes from later installments in the series. It's been a few years since I've seen the flick (despite my conviction that it's the only decent movie del Toro has made on American shores), and so maybe I'm misremembering, but I don't recall the main plotline of this book figuring in the movie at all. In this one, Hellboy, Abe, and Liz investigate the sudden, and very suspicious, death of Hellboy's adoptive father, Trevor Bruttenholm. The investigation takes them to a falling-down house in the middle of nowhere, with a slightly dotty inhabitant and her malevolent-looking butler. Somehow it comes as no surprise that Hellboy thinks he's going to find out more about his origins here...

Good stuff, this, heavily influenced by Lovecraft (as has been pointed out in a number of other reviews, so no need to dwell on it here) but with that distinctive Mignola touch that makes everything the guy puts out well worth reading. The story is solid, though it's obviously setup for the next volume. If you've never read Hellboy, no better time than the present to start. *** ½

4 out of 5 stars Much Better Than I Was Expecting   July 30, 2010
Logan Stewart (Kentucky)
Back during WWII, the Nazis were experimenting with all sorts of things. One aspect of research dealt with the paranormal. Finally, after years of preparation, a Nazi wizard/researcher/delusional-psycho summoned up a creature from the Deep, a tiny red-skinned, hornless man that would be named Hellboy. Only he showed up on the Allies side...

So begins Hellboy Volume 1: Seed of Destruction, and this intro is covered in a few pages up front. The remainder of the novel fast-forwards several years. Hellboy is a world-famous paranormal investigator, working for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development, or the BPRD. When the man Hellboy sees as his father winds up dying from some unknown otherworldly action, the investigator takes his team and begins to unravel the crime. In the process, he starts to learn a bit more about his life and why he's here.

The first thing I noticed about Hellboy was the beautiful artwork. The characters are all drawn very nicely, especially Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and the villains. All of the pages have a very dark coloring motif that makes the tale fit the Lovecraftian tones, mixed in with some pulp noir style to boot. The lettering is simple, nothing fancy, but anything else would detract from the story I think. Yes, Hellboy is beautifully illustrated.

Equally important is the characterization, and Hellboy was more complex than I was expecting. From obscure beginnings, Hellboy wonders why he is here and where he came from. Why is his right hand different? Indeed, Hellboy is not some tough and rowdy hellbeast, but actually a civilized mind that has loves and cares as you and I. Even the minor characters, Abe and Liz, have some depth to them, and this added greatly to the arc.

Finally, the story arc for the Seed of Destruction was compelling and interesting. I never really knew what to expect, and I kept wondering at things up through the climax. And oh what a climax. Several pages of excitement and some resolution to earlier mysteries, but also an impetus for plenty more questions and actions to come.

Overall I really enjoyed this first graphic novel in the Hellboy series. It had everything in it that I look for in a comic: beautiful art, interesting characters, and a great story. There was nothing I disliked about the graphic novel. In the end, if you're looking for a fun-filled, dark horror-tainted comic, Mike Mignola's Hellboy: Seed of Destruction is the perfect place to start. Easily recommendable.

3 out of 5 stars 5 star yarn on a 1 star binding = 3.   June 16, 2010
Kozmik_Pariah (Statesboro, Georgia)
This is good and its praises are all over.. but I think the terrible binding should be pointed out yet again. Falls apart quick. For a twenty (well 18) dollar (most comparable volumes'd run you 15 on lesser paper) book, the thing falls out of its paper pretty fast.

That's all I gotta say about this. If you want it, get the Library Editions.

5 out of 5 stars Ok I liked it though it's different.   May 23, 2010
Mathew A. Shember (Cupertino, CA United States)
My introduction to Hellboy was from the movies so I figured why not?

All the fans already know this story is different from the movie. You can see all the references and the plots but the stories go in a different direction. For example, the professor has a different end.

I should also mention, I suspect the movie drew parts from the other stories. This is especially evident with the "cliffhanger" at the end of this story.

Abe and Liz are in the story. Abe is pretty similar to the movie but Liz seems different. There are a few other characters who were not in the movie.

I will say the artwork is good and I liked the addons at the end as you get to see the iterations which became Hellboy.

Overall, I liked the story and am looking forward to the next installment.
