2 out of 5 stars Only worth half the money, due to a change in artist in the middle of the series   August 16, 2010
Pablo (California, United States)
I believe that a graphic novel needs three critical elements to be successful: a good story line, compelling characters, and great artists.
My first contact with the Witchblade series was in the form of a book called Witchblade Origins Volume 1: Genesis (v. 1) that collected issues 1 to 8. I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the art. I had never seen the work of Michael Turner before, and I really liked it. Given how much I liked that book, I decided to go ahead and buy the Compendium. Sadly, my love for the series died after reading 1/3 of the Compendium because of the following:
- Michael Turner, the man that brought Witchblade to life with his drawings, only contributed up to issue #21 or so. After that issue the artwork takes a plunge down that goes from dramatic and compelling art (by Turner) to cartoon-ish and comic drawings (by Randy Green and others). The artwork becomes really disappointing, when compared to Turner's work.

- The story is full of holes in the plot and the sequence. I can not mention them here without spoiling the story, but the integrity of the storyline is very quickly compromised, even with Michael Turner's art.

- The book is so large and heavy (5.5 pounds!) that it makes reading it a large effort instead of a leisurely read.

If you have seen some of Michael Turner's art and are a fan of it (as I am), I can recommend that instead of blowing the money on this book you buy some other great examples of his work: Fathom: The Definitive Edition Volume 1 TPB or Superman/Batman, Vol. 2: Supergirl.

4 out of 5 stars Been awhile..   July 7, 2010

I love Witchblade. I got into it when I was 13 (12 years ago) and learned to draw by copying Michael Turner's work. The story was awesome, the art was amazing.. I've since lost all of my original comics in my junky garage, so the compendium is a nice way to re-read a great, engaging story, full of action, mystery, and excitement. Well worth the money for the amount of issues you get, if your only concern is reading the story and looking at the art work - not collecting. It's heavy and very thick, so it's not something you can carry around with you. Any fan of the comic should add this to their collection as a way to re-experience the good ol' days and not have to bring out your box of comics. :) Also good for newcomers needing back issues; way cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to catch up!   July 4, 2010
Marexen
I've long been reading the Darkness, and for just as long have known I should be reading Witchblade too... but I always put it off. But with the new developements in the story I just can't ignore the other half any longer. At first I was worried about trying to catch up. The Witchblade has been going on for a bit longer then Darkness and I was sure I'd NEVER hunt down all the back issues.

This book was a WONDERFUL thing to find. It's a little daunting to read, being about 7lbs. But it saved me a lot of time and a lot of money from trying to hunt down the individual issues! Volume one collectes issues 1-50, which I knew would be hard to track down and potientaly pretty pricey! At my regular comic shop 50 issues at the standard 2.99 a book would have set me back nearly 150$! But this costs only a third of that!

I definatly recomend this to anyone looking to start reading the Witchblade! Go ahead and pick up Vol. 2 an you're only about 30 short of being caught up to the current issue! Saves time, and money... just don't expect the ease of single issues. I ordered Volumes one an two together an they weigh in right at 15lbs! Be prepared for some heavy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Great product, hate UPS.   May 26, 2010

I'm only placing this review because I love the books so much. Not even the storyline, the artwork is my main focus.

Just got this and The Darkness Compendium delivered.

I may as well have gotten these used, because the UPS guy just literally threw my package on the ground by my door. Nothing excuses this, ever. Both of my really nice, new books have WRECKED corners. The binding is now damaged and the top left corners of both of the new books are wrinkled, like someone treated it like crap. I can't opt to keep these in new condition, now, as they're permanently damaged.

Thanks a lot, UPS shipping. Just because it feels solid doesn't mean it's indestructible.

Two expensive books damaged upon arrival/in shipping.

Other than that, fantastic product. Much more preferable to getting a copy of each and every comic released. The only other problem is the choice of binding. While cheap(to cut down on costs, which is an admirable goal) the binding kind of keeps the center of the images a little hidden from view. To really get a good look at the two-pagers, you have to stress the binding, which will eventually damage the spine and cause pages to fall out. Oh well.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for series, 2 stars for binding   January 31, 2009

I bought this compendium to read this series after I learned that Marc Silvestri, who worked on "The Darkness" comic series, also did this. I had bought the newest versions that were re-released, and I have to say that I am impressed by them. The new covers are now white, making them stand out on your shelf and making them look cooler than the last versions. I have to say, after reading it all, that the series was awesome. It too has action in it, contains a cool main character. and contains a cool mystical power that destroys all in its way (called the Witchblade). I won't spoil anyithing else of the series, but will mention to "The Darkness" fans that Jackie Estacado, the main character of the already mentioned series, makes his first and flashy appearance in the series (sadly without his Darkness power, which hasn't arrived for him yet). I just want to note that this compendium does not contain the Witchblade/Wolverine crossover comic, so you'll have to buy the Top Cow/Marvle volume 1 to view it. My only two complaints for this book is that the binding, being a softcover, can easily tear and bend, since the binding on my book has now bent inwards from the whole reading. My other complaint being that since the book is big, long periods of reading caused my hands to become sore from the weight of the pages. Otherwise buy it if you like "The Darkness"

Quick Note: If anyone is wondering when the Witchblade Compendium Vol. 2 is coming out, there have been numerous rumors. One site states its coming out Feb 28, while a majority of websites say it is coming out somewhere in March. Nobody knows exactly when it will be released, so be on the lookout.
