5 out of 5 stars Love This Comic!   July 20, 2010
Japanerd
I love this comic, though I can safely say it is not for everyone and I would suggest reading it before buying it. It's still awesome. I have a tattoo of Nny and I had to order new copies of JTHM: Director's Cut and Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors because I read my first copies until they were falling apart at the seams.

Shipping for this item was FAST. I got it within a couple days and I was thrilled!

3 out of 5 stars Too Brutal   May 25, 2010
Kimberly Eck (Kildeer, IL United States)
Before I read this I read "Squee" and found it funny in a dark sense. There were points were I was laughing when I felt I really shouldn't. I was expecting this to be somewhat the same after reading some previews. Clearly those previews were censored because once I dived into the book I just thought, 'Jesus Christ this is brutal.' Lots of blood, gore, and psychotic moments that made me chuckle in certain instances (like when Johnny goes berserk on a store clerk for not having the slushy machine on) or feel uneasy (pretty much every other moment). Typically there will be a chapter and then an interlude to Johnny's own comic called "Happy Noodle Boy" which is about a stick figure that shouts obscenities at random people and things, which at times was funny, but was stupid none the less. If I were to recommend any Jhonen Vasquez graphic novel I would tell people to read "Squee" first because, quite frankly, this is just too brutal to your average reader with all of the psychotic nonsense that goes on, but I guess that's the reason why the title is "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac." I give it three stars just because of how brutal and stupid this comic can be. Sure at times it pulls it off and it can make me laugh or appreciate it, but most of the time I question why I chose to read this.

4 out of 5 stars Z?   April 25, 2010
S. McCracken (Nowhere)
A beautiful addition any book collection. JTHM has the perfect mix of graphic violence, mindless nonsense, insanity, and storyline. I adore this book, and Jhonen's art oozes a kind of style that many artists would drive themselves mad to accomplish. Honestly, I find it hard to set this book down any time it's near me.

My only complaint is that I couldn't find the hardback version here on amazon. I'm not exactly a "light" reader and find it hard to keep the book in "new car" condition. I keep the book in my backpack when I'm not reading it, and unfortunately the front cover has bent, creating an unsightly crease. So if you're looking for something to keep in your creepy stalker shrine to Jhonen V, I suggest you search the interwebs for the hardback version.

But for the price I paid for the paperback, I find it money well spent.

3 out of 5 stars fantastic, but...   April 24, 2010
the end (usa)
love the series! read it in high school and cracked up! so dark it's disturbing but its all full of dry humor. it's a dark comedy much more than a horror book. the series i would give ten stars if i could. this gets only three because for some reason it's missing all the side stories of a funny character called wobbly headed bob. it's also missing a bunch of random side stories, some of which are referenced in the main story as well as by the author in the very jacket for this edition! the things that got cut are HILARIOUS so i really missed them here. it's still an excellent story by itself so don't let it deter you from buying this if you don't feel like buying all seven original issues individually. especially if you never read the originals, you won't even know your missing anything because the main story is all there. there are one or two cartoons that were not in the originals which is nice to see. also there is a nice history of the character at the end. if it was complete and had the extra stuff it would be hands down five stars but it's incomplete. what an odd thing to do since leaving these things in would have only made the book another twenty pages or so (the side stories aren't very long). also this is a pretty disturbing book but it's all written with a sarcastic humorous tone. i'm saying this for all the people who don't understand the words "homicidal" and "maniac" and what they mean when written next to each other. there are a lot of reviews by people who were shocked at the grotesqueness of this book when i think the author makes it pretty clear whats beneath the cover with the title "johnny the homicidal maniac"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what else would you expect??? a family story???
